Back in the day, door locks were made from wood. The systems used the pin tumbler principle to prevent free movement of the door bar. One had to insert the right key which caused pins within the lock to be lifted out of drilled holes hence opening the lock. Once the key was removed, the pins fell back into the holes, thereby closing the lock. During this period, locksmiths were more than capable of constructing and repairing an entire lock, including its constituent parts.

Talking of keys, it is believed that Theodore of Samos invented the first key in the 6th Century B.C. In Rome, it was a common practice to see rich people wearing keys to their safes as rings. It was probably the safest way to protect their money and jewelry.

Still on ancient inventions, the oldest lock was discovered in the ruins of the Assyrian Empire, in the city of Khorsabad near Niveneh. After being analyzed, it is believed the lock was created around 704 B.C. As time went by, locksmiths improved on their craft and created a more efficient lock and key systems. The first significant change in the industry came between the years 870 and 900 when an all-metal lock was invented. From here, the lock systems developed were much stronger and durable.

A rise in demand for locks resulted in setting up of industries to cater to the varying needs of clients across the globe. Locksmiths, on the other hand, enhanced their skill set to match the changing security challenges. Today, a lock and key expert can install, repair and maintain various lock systems.
